How to Hold a Job While Dealing with Schizophrenia

If you’re someone who deals with a lot of stress already in the workplace, you may be using apps to help already. If you’re dealing with other problems, such as schizophrenia, it can be a bit of a challenge for you.

If you’re dealing with high-functioning schizophrenia, you may already have a job, but you’re struggling to keep it. Luckily though, there may be some things that can help you when dealing with a job while having schizophrenia.

Here, we’ll dive into this, and what exactly you need to properly hold down a job easily, and effectively.

Start out Slow

When starting out, you may want to; go into this in a low manner. That way, you can get into the habit of human contact with others, and getting the hang of working again. This does give you not only basic skills, but also is good if you’re struggling to maintain everything.

Keep a Positive Energy

Positive energy is really good, especially if you have schizophrenia.  Sometimes you may feel like you’re diving into the workplace drama because everyone’s doing it, but you don’t have to be that way. Instead of falling into the doom and gloom, it can be good if you keep a positive energy, so you’re not dealing with the fallout from delusions and the like.

Be polite to Others

Next, make sure you’re polite to other people. This of course can help you do better with handling the symptoms.  You don’t feel as encumbered by your delusions and the like.  You should make sure that you keep a polite energy.

If you feel like you’re struggling with that energy, perhaps see if you can talk to your boss about taking a mental health day as well.

Ask those Questions

Next, you should be ready to ask questions. This of course, can prevent things from becoming hard on you, and can help with monitoring symptoms too. Getting used to the workplace will help with acclimation, and if you’re not certain about how something works, ask them about it.

It’s better to ask questions and be a little bit annoying than to not ask, mess things up, and then make a huge mistake because of this.

Have a thicker Skin

Schizophrenia is a hard mental illness to recover from sometimes, especially in this field.  When you’re recovering, you’ll feel a little bit more sensitive than others around you might be.

This may make things harder to deal with, especially if you’re struggling with emotions already.

No matter how much you try to fit in, there will always be people who may not like you.  For some who have schizophrenia, it can be a struggle to overcome this.  If you do feel a little bit emotionally charged, you should find a way to calm down.

Sometimes this happens when starting out. if someone is snappy for whatever reason, it might be due to pressure from the workplace, or their own problems. Remember, you’re not alone, so don’t be afraid to learn to understand people better.

Learn to Accept the Praise and the Criticism

Finally, learn to get better at accepting praise and criticism.  You may hear this and feel that you don’t believe them, or maybe they’re pointing out a flaw that’s not there.

This can be hard to accept, but learning to not get upset when you mess up, or thanking your boss when you get praise is really good. This can help you acknowledge the feelings better, and it can help you be a better person.

Consider Help

If you feel like you’re struggling in the workplace and need help, you’re not alone.  You can get the help that you need for this. To get some help with this, or to better understand schizophrenia and coping mechanisms in the workplace, you should go to Mind Diagnostics to find more information.
